Peter as a baby with his siblings
"By the time I was 4 years old, I had lost two mothers.
I was found in a park in Nanjing, China and soon placed in an orphanage. Within a year, I was adopted by a single mother who had always wanted a child but due to medical reasons, wasn’t able to have one biologically. I spent the first 3 beautiful years of my life with her until she suddenly passed away from pneumonia. I was then given to her best friend who soon became my second American adopted family.
I love my life. I’m grateful for the opportunities and friends I have made from various races and ethnicities. I don’t relate to my racial background as much but that’s okay, because I take a little bit from each background and have created my own unique identity.
For a long time, I had feelings of abandonment but felt some form of closure after visiting the orphanage and the spot in China where they found me. I immediately felt some relief knowing my biological mother placed me somewhere where I could be found. I know in the end, she made the right choice. I have yet to search for my biological family but with all the new technology, there might be some chance I could find my biological family one day. But, at the end of the day, I am confident in myself and know that my past has made me who I am today."
